the dream of roses
-but let’s talk about the dream I had on the overnight train to Paris.
In the bunk opposite me, an old lady is clutching her sheets - delicate hands, blue-veined. Clutching her sheets as if even in her sleep she is defending herself from the world.
Above me is ceiling, so close i wonder if i will touch it with my nose. All around me, the rattling of the train.
My best friend lies in the...

The Crazy Story of Jorge and Emmy Lou
this is a story of two curly-haired people. once upon a time (timeuponaonce) a curly-haired boy and a curly-haired girl met and became friends. a year passed, and he had to leave Vancouver, but - before he left - he said: “i like you.” and she didn’t know what to say. it was 2 years before they could be together again. in those 2 years...

Anonymous asked: Where did you learn photography?

“No, you don’t understand,” he says, and I see him slip the dinner knives in his pocket.
The smell in here is damp, and the table is long. Hideous wallpaper stretches along the walls. Dark brown shadows are peeling down the faces of everyone present, like photos from the ’70s.
I know the man who is talking, through the haze of this dream I am dreaming. Yes. I realize suddenly, he is...

that awkward moment when you're hunting for...
…and tells you that they had to go to Africa and they won’t be able to give you the documents to the rental property, and you just need to pay a deposit of $600 and the property will be yours, and you realize that it’s a just a scam.
The thing to do, i have found, is to reply with a similarly ridiculous email. Fill it with as much nonsense as possible. See below for...

professional gypsies
i miss feeling like a professional gypsy. i miss the creak of stairs under my feet; the smoothly sweep of banisters under my fingers as I glide from city to city, saying I have been here, returning my bath towel and room key to the front desk.
I miss the sweep of heat across our foreheads. embarking from a bus
a train, a car, a plane
onto land that has never felt the soles of our feet. the first...

and that was the dream
we are holding hands, you and I, in a paprika landscape. the houses here are stacked tidily, like Duplo castles with paper flags. the people walking around have mechanical joints and painted smiles.
nearby, you see an alleyway. it is narrow and it smells of lilacs. “let’s go,” you whisper, pulling my hand. my fingers are sliding out of your grip as you start running forward. and i am...

The Lord is merciful and gracious,
slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
He will not always chide
nor will He keep His anger forever.
He does not deal with us according to our sins,
nor repay us according to our iniquities.
For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
so great is His steadfast love toward those who fear Him;
as far as the east is from the west,
so far does...

we will never be heroines in a Hitchcock film
kayla: yeah, she’s like one of those heroines from a hitchcock movie
hair’s always perfect even running from the bad guys
sardonic, cool sense of humor
i so want to be like those women
me: yes
i have reached the conclusion
however
that i will never be one of those women
and that if i am running from bad guys, i will most likely trip and fall in a mud puddle and have...

we travelled the world a year ago
These are just random excerpts from the travel notes we wrote a year ago as we backpacked through the Mediterranean - this part is just about our time in Greece. We wrote about our lives every single day, for almost 3 months, and it drove us crazy. They’re not especially interesting to anybody except ourselves, and I don’t really expect anybody to fully read them. It’s more like a way of...

Let’s yell out colours now! I glance over at my sister as we fly through the air on the backyard swings. Okay, okay, close your eyes now, just say the colours that you see on the backs of your eyelids as you float through the sunset, go!
Red
Green
Purple no purply brown no you know that colour
Yeah yeah I know that colour – orange!
Black
That pink colour that Oma always likes!
Amber!

I love being a Canucks fan
Two older men sit at the table to our left. Longer grey hair and glasses and an expression like they should be listening to classical music, but instead the changing lights from the hockey game on the massive screen are flickering across their faces. Canucks hockey, game seven, facing first-round elimination from the playoffs.
They speak in low murmurs: “Come on, guys. That’s it.”
One of the...

Dear T,
I like that we have run around in a field of Queen Anne’s lace on a remote island in Greece. I like that we have drawn eyeliner around our eyes to look like raccoons, while our noses grew red from the snowy air. I like that we have eaten brie with crackers at 3am and contemplated the fact that we were sitting on the kitchen floor while the cats were sitting on the chairs.
I LIKE THAT...
